| 05:54 \sh | M`cc`_, I don't know who said this, but the FAI packages in Ubuntu are as good as in debian...the problems of different package names are resolved, as ubuntu fai packages are shipping defaults for ubuntu...and you can get always PPA packages of FAI from the FAI PPa on launchpad...while I'm working on pushing the new FAI version on oneiric |

| 12:26 yeshellothere | M`cc`_ and \sh, as far as i can tell the ubuntu packages ship completely broken |
| 12:26 yeshellothere | and you will not be able to build the nfsroot |
| 12:26 yeshellothere | because it is completely misconfigured :/ |
| 12:26 yeshellothere | oz__: im back in the office in a couple days, can you tell me what ubuntu install mechanism you used please |
| 12:42 oz__ | nothing special, straight fai, basically |
| 13:00 \sh | yeshellothere, the natty package are working on natty and is backported to lucid...(inside the ubuntu fai ppa) |
| 13:01 \sh | for oneiric I'm working on the new version |
| 13:01 yeshellothere | \sh: i recently set up an ubuntu natty VM, and ran fai-setup, but i got a series of errors that i was never able to resolve |
| 13:02 yeshellothere | i removed a couple of console-tools and console-boot or similar lines from /etc/fai/NFSROOT, and then the error was that upstart conflicted with sysvinit, and i could not see any mention of either in any configs |
| 13:03 yeshellothere | i left it there in frustration and went home, i'll be back in tomorrow |
| 13:03 \sh | yeshellothere, there is a mail from siretart...about the issue on natty because of broken live-boot |
| 13:03 \sh | https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/live-boot/+bug/724452 |
| 13:04 \sh | and the fixed live-initramfs was/is in the ppa |
| 13:04 yeshellothere | \sh: i did not add the PPA for natty, i'll do that tomorrow |
| 13:04 yeshellothere | i'll delete and recreate the VM first |
| 13:05 \sh | yeshellothere, https://lists.uni-koeln.de/pipermail/linux-fai/2011-March/008985.html |
| 13:06 yeshellothere | hmm, that doesn't make sense then, i'll see what the PPA gives me tomorrow anyhow |
| 13:06 yeshellothere | if you're around at about this time i will do any tests you like |
| 13:06 \sh | yeshellothere, any other bugs please file on launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fai |
| 13:07 \sh | (when you install the fai server part on ubuntu :)) |
| 13:07 yeshellothere | i will if i can isolate the source, but i wasn't able to understand why it was installing it |

| 14:05 fai45 | Hello, an update: Using 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04.2 and the FAI packages from the PPA, I was quite successful. |
| 14:06 fai45 | I won't have time to write anything up in detail for another 2 weeks or so, but this is my third year using FAI for a week-long event where we setup a lab for folks, and I need to document the experience regardless. I'm happy to make it public. |
| 14:06 Ahmtah | :) |
| 14:06 fai45 | I'm currently wrestling with the fact that the default packages selected for the demo host end up being somewhat Debian-centric, and the desktop lacks, e.g., the Network Manager applet to painlessly configure a wireless connection. |
| 14:07 fai45 | (not that I have much experience with the Network Applet) |
| 14:08 fai45 | ...but if anybody can suggest a package list that will replicate the Ubuntu 10.04.2 vanilla install from the CD, I would appreciate it. |
| 14:08 fai45 | e.g., I had to change linux-image-486 to linux-image-generic, and remove iceweasel |
| 14:08 fai45 | I'm sure there are more |
| 14:09 Ahmtah | Have you preserve the partition? |
| 14:14 oz__ | fai45: http://paste.debian.net/119937/ these package list may help you |

| 14:24 coda | excuse me guys, I've just started installing my 2nd client, but it fails during 'configure' phase.. grub-setup says 'Your embedding area is unusually small. core.img won't fit in it..' |
| 14:25 coda | does anybody know if there is any workaround for this? |
| 14:29 mikap | sounds like wrong alignment of partitions |
| 14:31 coda | oh |
| 14:34 Ahmtah | pardon guyes, how can I save the old disk partitions, and install the OS in 2nd partition? |
| 14:41 coda | mikap: could I paste.debian my disk_config file? I don't figure out where the problem is :( |

| 19:25 fai45 | Ahmtah: I had to do that once before. |
| 19:27 fai45 | See this thread; it's how I figured it out. Note that I got it wrong the first time and destroyed a partition I wanted, so do test it first: http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-fai@uni-koeln.de/msg01358.html |
| 19:27 fai45 | os__: Thanks for the package list; giving it a try now |
| 19:46 fai45 | __oz: That did help quite a bit. It now has the look and feel of an Ubuntu system. The Notification Area currently reads "No indicators" though; need to check into that. |
| 19:46 fai45 | Wow I can't seem to type your name; sorry |
| ErKa (~keryell@92.90.20.198) joined #fai. |
| 20:03 fai45 | Package indicator-applet fixed my ability to log in / out in the Notification Area, but I still have no volume control or network status. Right-clicking the Panel and adding the Network Monitor is not the same thing. I need users to be able to connect to wireless networks, ec. |
| 20:16 fai45 | Package network-manager-gnome gets the familiar "wireless signal strength" icon back. |
| 20:22 fai45 | In general the panel / notification area seems to be screwed up. Anybody know which packages I should add just to get towards a default install? That I needed to individually add network-manager-gnome and indicator-applet is to me a sign that something else is wrong. |
| 20:43 fai45 | Hi all: I believe I can express my problem better now. Despite including ubuntu-desktop as a package to install, if I run 'tasksel --task-packages ubuntu-desktop' to list all the packages, and then try to install them all as one long list of packages, there are about 459 packages that are not installed. |
| 20:44 fai45 | Also, if I run tasksel in interactive mode, ubuntu-desktop is shown as already being installed. However it appears to be incomplete. I don't see any error messages to this effect in the logfiles. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. |
