| 09:18 cz8s | hi, i need to install fai on a server with >2GB disks. I tried using a disk_config with disklabel:gpt-bios, and the extra partition for grub gets created, but grub hangs on boot. any ideas ? |
| 09:31 oz_ | cz8s: can you put the disk_config file on paste.debian.net? |
| 09:33 oz_ | <ern severity="almost none, just funny" worksafe="depend much on the job">http://www.rotten.com/library/medicine/bodily-functions/pissing/</ern> |
| 09:38 cz8s | oz_: http://paste.debian.net/116719/ |
| 09:39 oz_ | why you use lvm like this? |
| 09:40 cz8s | that was pasted from the documentation I think. |
| 09:42 cz8s | yes. its from the fai wiki. And it works with msdos partitions |
| 09:44 oz_ | cz8s: which one in the wiki, you did modify it, didn't you? |
| Action: oz_ tries to circumvent lvm all the time |
| 09:47 cz8s | http://wiki.fai-project.org/wiki/Setup-storage. We only changed the size of swap and / |
| Action: cz8s likes lvm :) |
| 09:47 cz8s | but I will try without lvm and see if anything changes |
| 09:48 oz_ | I'll do a test of the example later |
| 09:51 cz8s | i am trying this: |
| 09:51 cz8s | http://paste.debian.net/116721/ will report when its finished |
| 09:56 cz8s | it works without lvm |
| 09:56 cz8s | thanks for the hint |
| 09:56 oz_ | :-) |
| 09:57 oz_ | I don't know the trick howto boot from lvm by heart...I just know: there is one. |
| Guest2404 (~mt@shell.forsyte.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de) left irc: Ping timeout: 480 seconds |
| 09:59 cz8s | its linux. of course there is a way :) the server boots now. thats the most importand part. I will have a look at it later. |

| 10:07 mikap | Guest616: hey :) |
| 10:08 oz_ | hm. cz8s did you use setup-storage? |
| 10:09 oz_ | here, the example fails to install |
| 10:12 cz8s | yes. As I understand, LVM and disklabel only work with setup-storage ? |
| 10:13 oz_ | yes iirc |
| 10:14 oz_ | oh, now install works |
| 10:14 oz_ | let's see if it boots |
| 10:20 mgoetze | cz8s: hm do you really want your logical volume to be called "_root"? |
| 10:20 cz8s | why not ? |
| 10:21 mgoetze | just wondering. anyway, might be that the parser has a problem with that, but that's just pure speculation without any actual error messages of course :) |
| 10:22 cz8s | when using a msdos disklabel, everything works perfectly. never had a problem with the lvm names |
| 10:22 mgoetze | ok. i've never tried with gpt so no idea |
| 10:23 cz8s | gah. I just installed the server again. this time with a 3.4T rootpartition. and grub hangs again. |
| 10:23 cz8s | so lvm does not seem to be the problem ... |
| 10:23 oz_ | cz8s: I use the exampe, hangs at boot, too |
| 10:23 oz_ | let's see if the vg is activated... |
| 10:24 cz8s | I will try d-i next and see if this is a debian bug or fais fault |
| ErKa (~keryell@dy086141.etu.univ-rennes1.fr) left irc: Ping timeout: 480 seconds |
| 11:41 oz_ | okay. the example works, when there is lvm2 installed in the host. ;) |
| 11:41 oz_ | cz8s: I just booted the example fine |
| 11:42 cz8s | on disks > 2TB ? |
| 11:45 oz_ | no I don't have a > 2TB disk |
| 11:46 oz_ | but if you can boot normal, why not lvm? |
| 11:47 cz8s | i tried with and without lvm. both work if the partitions are smaller than 2GB. bit if they are bigger, grub hangs |
| 11:48 cz8s | i just installed a normal debian. and that works with 3.4TB |
| 11:48 cz8s | i will diff grub.cfg next ... |
| 11:48 oz_ | fai basically is normal debian |

| 13:31 cz8s | fai seems to partition the harddisk in a wrong way. I will send a mail to fai-users when I have a solution. thanks for the help here. |
