16:23 snarkOk, I worked around the grub issue by creating my own config instead of using update-grub, which is kind of lame, but will work... now I need that static IP stuff to work.  I built a custom kernel, removed IP_PNP_DHCP, IP_PNP_BOOTP and IP_PNP_RARP but left IP_PNP and the thing is still trying to get a DHCP address.  Any one have any ideas?  Anyone else trying to use static IPs?
16:32 MrfaiYou do not need a special kernel for using a static IP. Just remove the class DHCPC.

16:45 snarkMrfai: It hangs on boot waiting for an IP.  Maybe I should have specified this was booting off a CD using an nfsroot...
16:46 snarkand the kernel parameters ip=ip_addr:server_addr:gateway:netmask:hostname:eth0:off
16:47 snarkI'm over in kernelnewbies asking, but I think it might be a kernel bug at this point, since it still tries to get a DHCP address with IP_PNP_DHCP unconfigured in the kernel.
17:23 glanceuse initramfs instead of the kernel ip settings.

17:54 snarkglance: can you offer any more details?
17:54 snarkperhaps extracts the initramfs, but what would I modify?
17:57 snarkspecify ip= in the initrd instead of the linux line?
18:08 glanceno. let the initramfs process the ip= cmdline instead of the linux kernel
18:09 glance/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/{nfs,live} depending on how you boot
18:24 snarkok, I guess I'm not sure how switch this...  I see in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/live where it would try to process the IP, I'm not sure where to set the parameters.  I assumed it was being handled by the kernel, but now I guess I don't know...  should I add a nodhcp flag?
18:27 snarkI guess this is my question.  So in grub I'm setting 'linux /boot/vmlinux boot=live ip=ip_addr:server_ip:netmask:etc ....' and I assumed it was the kernel processing the ip= stuff.  How do I get initramfs to process it?
18:33 snarkhmm..  within the nfsroot this stuff seems to live in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/live though....
