[09:05] hi [09:08] Mrfai: I think when $ROOTPW is used in the scripts, it should be protected with quotes so that it works even if the user sets an empty root password [09:11] Mrfai: in my case, I set up sudo and want to disable the root password (like in an ubuntu default install), so I set an empty $ROOTPW [09:24] do you have a patch for that? [09:27] Mrfai mgoetze stockholm -> http://michael-prokop.at/blog/2010/07/08/report-from-fai-developer-workshop-072010/ [09:27] cool [09:28] Action: mikap now preparing the text for Debian Weekly News [09:31] Mrfai: I don't, it's just about adding quotes. but I can prepare one if you want [09:32] mikap: wirst du auch noch eine kurze Mail an linux-fai schicken? [09:32] Mrfai: jepp [09:33] Adri2000: you mean this line: $ROOTCMD usermod -p $ROOTPW root [09:33] changing into $ROOTCMD usermod -p "$ROOTPW" root [09:34] yep, I'm preparing the patch. there are a few files where it's needed [09:35] oh, it's not needed. I think I will find all locations of ROOTPW [09:36] I'm sure you will :). otherwise I've done http://adrishost.net/~adri2000/rootpw-quotes.patch [09:37] mikap: push blog also to planet debian? [12:07] mgoetze: I did not change anything from the default grub install configuration that came in the Debian package. [12:07] mgoetze: What sort of details do you need? [12:21] david_: so you just took the simple-examples and replaced debian by ubuntu in the sources.list? [12:22] david_: if so, i'm surprised it works at all :) but what fai version are you using? [12:24] can some svn expert tell me how i can tell svn that i want the whole fai repository except tags? (i.e. branches, people, trunk) [12:28] mgoetze: I followed the wiki guide for setting up an installation environment for Jaunty, but it didn't change anything for the grub portion [12:29] mgoetze: FAI 3.2.17~lenny1 [12:32] david_: so do you have files/boot/grub/menu.lst/postinst ? [12:33] mgoetze: yes [12:34] hm i thought that doesn't work on ubuntu [12:34] Well, it is a debian server and install environment [12:35] yes, but ubuntu mangles handling of this file in the chroot because of ucf [12:36] anyway, it should replace #ROOT_PARTITION# by whatever you get in disk_var.sh [12:36] if you are using uuids i would expect the latest version of setup-storage to set that as ROOT_PARTITION so you might try just upgrading [12:37] I would assume that it is getting /dev/hda from there, because it was broken in the fstab until I set the uuid option [12:38] can you paste disk_var.sh from your logs to a pastebin somewhere? [12:38] From the logs on a client after an install? [12:39] yes [12:41] I'll have to re-type it, the logs are on the client only, but it's only 4 lines [12:43] ralfgr (~rg@p15145560.pureserver.info) joined #fai. [12:43] howdy! [12:45] ralfgr: good idea :) [12:45] now we have a problem with disk alignment [12:46] mgoetze: not currently. We have 2 versions of lucid to be installed, both have completely diff software packages, and eventually we are planning on expanding to add a debian installer as well [12:46] if we just use FAI to create the partitions, we get problems because of the underlying storage and it's 4K block size [12:47] there is an tool called mbralign that can be used to fix that after creation [12:47] but we would like to create the partions with FAI aligned at install time [12:48] fdisk /dev/whatever1 x b 1 64 [12:48] the standard is 63 but it has to be 64 [12:48] david_: so you could work around the problem by just using a newer kernel in your install system [12:48] is there a way to do this directly with FAI [12:49] ralfgr: i don't know. i think you should email linux-fai@uni-koeln.de, because mt, the main developer of setup-storage, is very active on the mailing list but rarely on irc [12:50] david_: see e.g. my guide for using the grml kernel on the wiki [12:50] mgoetze: thanks, I'll take a look at it. [12:51] david_: alternatively, use grub2 [12:52] mgoetze: Is either of those options the preferred method? [12:52] s/Is/Are [12:53] mgoetze: thanks, I (or a collegue) will contact the list [12:53] david_: i think in the long run you'll want to go with the newer kernel as you might eventually run into hardware not supported by the lenny kernel [12:54] mgoetze: I'll give that a try, thanks. I'll let you know if I run into any more questions and/or how it turns out. [12:54] sure, np [13:22] I followed the steps to use the grml kernel and re-ran make-fai-nfsroot. I then attempted to install using fai and a lot of errors just scrolled past too fast to read. All I could catch was that there were a pile of lines about aufs errors because there was not enough disk space available. [13:22] The system then automatically rebooted, I was unable to ctrl+c and get it to cancel after the first of the errors appeared on a second attempt [13:23] Mrfai: there is a grub-pc patch from mt in experimental branch which looks like it is partially applied. do you have any plans for it? [13:27] ah or not applied at all [13:27] anyway it does some things with simple-examples... [13:28] ralfgr (rg@p15145560.pureserver.info) left #fai. [13:37] I have no plans for this patch.
