Do you still have that patch / what is your email address so i can search my offensively large collection of emails? [14:30] Joelio (~joel@office-112.zen.co.uk) joined #fai. [14:31] Hi all, I'm thinking of using fai within a KVM virtual machine [14:31] do people here use it that way at all? [14:31] I take it dhcp/tftp will pass over the virtual bridge? [14:33] Winkie: it's on the FAI homepage: http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/contact/ [14:34] sts: it's ok thanks, Mrfai sent me a PM :) [14:35] Joelio: bridges are usually layer 2 devices, which don't limit broadcast domains. [14:35] Joelio: so as long as you didn't firewall anything it should work. [14:36] cool, it's still hypothetical at the moment. I've been designing an automated install and central config management solution using FAI/Chef/GIt etc.. [14:37] I've got all of the other services in a ganeti KVM cluster, which works great [14:37] Joelio: nice. blog about it. :-) [14:37] FAI would be the last part to move into ganeti [14:37] yea, will do!! [14:37] I've got swathes of docs for $WORK, so will be easy to blog it :) [14:42] Using FAI for virtual machine can be done in two ways. First, you are booting (PXE) an virtual host with an empty hard disk and run FAI the usual way. [14:43] The second method is to setup a chroot environment (using fai dirinstall), then boot the virual machine using this chroot a the file system [14:43] the only issues i had with FAI in virtual machines was using OpenVZ and getting the device to pass DHCP etc. I suspect this was a configuration issue though. [14:44] but that was the server running inside one, which is probably not recommended :) [14:44] Mrfai: Yes, I saw some docs that Henning wrote on Ganeti with FAI using dirinstall [14:46] Cool, well I'll get this blogged up.. it's a culmination of about 6 month work, with a lot of help from the community, pretty happy with it! [14:46] i wish i could devote that amount of time to a particular project :( [15:02] Winkie: This has been at the same time as doing my regular sysadmin work.. and a lot of late nights! :) [15:05] Joelio: haha i can imagine, our deployment system is quite hacked together and using git is probably a better way to go for some aspects [15:08] All good though, it's been an invaluable learning experience that's forced us to think about our systems and processes [15:08] Just be happy when it's over, haha [15:19] haha i know that feeling [15:23] simNIX (~simNIX@156-60.bbned.dsl.internl.net) joined #fai.
