[09:33] Hi all, I'm tryign to create an FAI CD to install different types of systems (mail bastions, dns caches etc). I understand that I can pass kerrnel parameters via the /proc/cmdline value, but I'm wondering how I can use the partitioning to to create the correct type of partition sceme? [09:40] Joelio: are you familiar with the class concept of FAI? [09:44] allee (~ach@allee.mpe.mpg.de) left irc: Remote host closed the connection [09:44] BlindBunny: Vaguely, do I need to also set a class variable too on the grub line? [09:45] mgoetze: thanks [09:45] BlindBunny: let's get to that in a second - do you have different classes for different kinds of systems (mail bastions, dns caches, etc.)? [09:45] BlindBunny:? Joelio of course :) [09:46] BlindBunny: No, I don't at the moment, I'm fairly new to FAI and still trying to get my head around it [09:47] allee (~ach@allee.mpe.mpg.de) joined #fai. [09:48] Joelio: k, well, you should do that. FAI is all about classes. Whenever you need to express a difference in configuration (mail bastion vs. dns cache for example, e.g. the different packages to be installed), you do it via classes [09:49] Joelio: the idea is that when booting, a client automatically determines its host name. And then check out /srv/fai/config/class/10-base-classes - that file then defines a set of classes for each client host name. [09:49] Joelio: so you tie a set of classes to a host name, and so one of your class names probably should be MAIL_BASTION or some such. [09:49] Joelio: why? [09:49] Joelio: because then you can group all configuration elements (including how to partition) by this one class [09:50] Joelio: you would put the parititioning information into the file /srv/fai/config/disk_config/MAIL_BASTION, for example [09:50] BlindBunny: At boot, the client may not have a hostname.. I want to present the user with a grub menu of different options on what they want the machine to be and set IP information at the end. I don't have a DHCP/PXE booting infrastucture you see and have boxes in several disparate geographical locations where I can't mount NFS etc.. [09:51] you can also define classes on the kernel command line. Read man fai-class [09:51] so you can create several grub menu entries, which define different classes [09:52] Mrfai: Cheers, I'll take a look. I realise that what I'm doing is outside of the normal remit of FAI, but due to the limitiations we'll have to do it this way. I'm thinking of having a bootable USB stick in each new machine and if I need to reconfigure/rebuild I can use the console connction to boot from the USB and rebuild [09:53] Joelio: yeah, we do it that way around here, too. Works well. [09:53] BlindBunny: That's good to know, I thought I might be the only one :) [09:58] I don't suppose anybody knows of any ncurses or otherwise scripts to configure IP information do you? I suppose I could easily write a bit of bash, bit don't want to reinvent the wheel [09:59] see this example http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/download/misc/30menu.source [10:04] allee (~ach@allee.mpe.mpg.de) left irc: Remote host closed the connection [10:05] allee-k_ (~allee-k@alleehol.mpe.mpg.de) joined #fai.
