11:28 JoelioHi guys, does anyone run FAI over a large network? If so how do they get round the problem where  DHCP isn't routed? With rules to pass through the DHCP requests or DHCP relays?
11:30 maswanwe use dhcp relays, IIRC

11:56 JoelioOk, cool.. it makes the large scale implementation a little more involved, but I can see it being better in the long term.
11:57 JoelioWhen using DHCP relays, how does the inter DHCP server -> relay transport work? Is it just DHCP or some kind of tunnel?

12:02 sepit jsut works i have not looked at the actualy protocol. i belive it just forward it, but with the real dhcp server as destination ip instead of the dhcp broadcast
12:29 maswanJoelio: To be honest, I don't know. We just tell the networking folks, "dhcp for this network should go to this IP over here"
12:30 MrfaiAFAIK you can configure your route to forward DHCP request, or you can use an external program for this. in debian it's called dhcp3-relay
fxcp (~ctp@brsg-d9befc74.pool.mediaWays.net) left irc: Ping timeout: 480 seconds
12:32 maswanIt makes sense to do this in the netwokring equipment too, because then it might also filter out the dhcp talk so that noone can setup a rogue dhcp server. at least that's how ours work.

13:35 JoelioCheers Mrfai, I'd already done some investigation with dhcp3-relay and it looks the way to go. I think you can do DHCP over ipsec, which looks interesting

14:01 glancedhcp-relays picks up the broadcast, and then unicasts it to the dhcp-server
14:02 glanceand adds some options like agent-id and so on.

14:21 mettleri am using a custom kernel, when FAI_FLAGS=reboot is set, the machine reboots correctly,  but when i manually do "reboot/faireboot/init 6 ..or all of them i a row" it gets stuck ;(
14:22 mettlermaybe its because of my kernel's apm/acpi options?! -but how does fai reboot then?
14:22 oz_mettler: reboot -f works
14:22 oz_but the rest does not work, due to the missing runlevel scripts.
14:23 mettler^^ rebooted, thx man!
15:55 Joelioglance: I take it the unicast is routable?
15:57 glancejupp.
15:57 glanceits a unicast from the relay to the configured dhcp-server.
15:58 Joeliocool, seems like all the pieces of the automated infrastructure are fallimng together nicely :)
15:58 glance( now its time for the mad-doctor-laught.wav )
