| 07:11 sep | cdfs, i guess your having a problem with your partitioning, you might try to post the fai.log in addition to the partition layout. |

| 07:28 sep | cdfs, the fai.log have the errors not at the end. |
| 07:28 sep | since it does a lot after the error like saving logs and stuff |
| 07:28 sep | hence why you should post the entire log |
| 07:29 cdfs | no, it doesnt do anything after the error.. |
| 07:29 cdfs | it just aborts and leaves me with a command prompt |
| 07:29 cdfs | but I can post the fai.log later |
| 07:30 sep | cdfs, well you can just comment out everything and enable one and one line untill you find the perpetrator. |

| 12:05 Mrfai | I think we have to look at the error handling more globally. there are more cases where currently the return code of some script is not perfect. |
| 12:06 Mrfai | But I think I have fixed the case that install_pacakges always returns 0. Or at leasrt I've made some change and hoped that it will fix it. This was after 3.2.1, so only available in the svn version |

| 14:20 serieus | I have a problem with setting the hostname while the installation is going on. I use a script that is called from /usr/sbin/fai that reads user input and sets the variable HOSTNAME with the user input. "read -e RHOSTNAME" "export HOSTNAME=`echo $RHOSTNAME`" "hostname $RHOSTNAME". This is what the small set-hostname script contains. It's called defining the variable "target" in /usr/sbin/fai. BUT :-) Unfortunately a gethostname() gives the IP address becaus |
| 14:21 serieus | use-host-decl-names in dhcpd.conf. So the result of this is, for example: postfix not configuring during installation because it sets an IP address in the main.cf file because that's what it gets during an gethostname() |
| 14:23 serieus | What could be a possible solution for this problem ? Is it even possible to change the hostname during installation of a FAI client from an IP address to an user-inputted string ? |
| 14:44 Mrfai | if you have use-host-decl-names in dhcpd.conf, your host must get the hostname, not the IP address. If not you have a problem and should find the error. |
| 14:48 serieus | I'm way beyond that. I don't have a problem with use-host-decl-names. I disabled that on purpose. That's because i want to set the hostname during installation instead of having to define it before i boot an machine to let it be installed with FAI |
| ErKa (keryell@keryell.pck.nerim.net) joined #fai. |
| 14:50 Mrfai | serieus: how is your script called, that reads the hostname? Has it suffix .source? If not, setting of the variable will fail. |
| 14:51 Mrfai | using the hostname command shoould work, but you will see the old name in the shell prompt. |
| 14:52 serieus | I don't use hooks for this. I call the script directly from /usr/sbin/fai which is a symlink -from- /etc/init.d/rcS |
| 14:53 serieus | I'll show you the contents of the -small- script |
| 14:53 serieus | echo "Please give your desired hostname: " |
| 14:53 serieus | read -e RHOSTNAME |
| 14:53 serieus | export HOSTNAME=`echo $RHOSTNAME` |
| 14:53 serieus | hostname "$RHOSTNAME" |
| 14:53 serieus | that's it |
| 14:54 serieus | everything goes fine. Except when for example: configuring postfix trough apt. Because it uses gethostname() and that still returns the IP address of the machine |
| 15:03 Mrfai | what does the command hostname return? name or IP address? |
| 15:06 serieus | Hold on, i'll try |
| 15:08 serieus | It gives the modified hostname |
| 15:08 serieus | So it does that correctly |
| 15:09 serieus | But, as i can see, for instance the hosts file on the -installed target- system also get's filled with the ip address |
| 15:09 serieus | 10.20.20.6 10.20.20.6.company.corp 10.20.20.6 |
| 15:10 serieus | but when i do an hostname it gives me the hostname as an output... |
| 15:25 serieus | It's fixed ! |
| 15:25 serieus | The solution: |
| 15:25 serieus | setting the HOSTNAME variable and the hostname trough the hostname command as a first thing in /usr/sbin/fai |
| 15:33 serieus | Okay bye :) |
